Street lights
During the coming months parishioners will notice that more of the old inefficient street lights around the Parish will be changed for new units with low power consumption LED bulbs. The process has been running for some time and 11 of the 28 streetlights around the Parish have already been upgraded. This change has financial and environmental benefits.
The Parish Council have been advised that the unit cost of electricity for the street lights will be increased substantially. In view of this, at the Barrow Parish Council meeting on 17th January 2023 the issue of street lighting was debated, with the following conclusion:
That new LED lights will have the capability to operate on a part night basis as a further contribution toward saving money and reducing the carbon footprint incurred by the Council. In addition the Council will be moving all existing LED street lights to part night operation with lamps being automatically turned off between the hours of midnight and 5am.
Prior to taking the decision, the Council asked West Mercia police for information relating to Part Night streetlight operation and the likely effect on crime and lawless behaviour should Part Night lighting be adopted. The police advised that National Institute for Health and care Research (NIHR) has concluded that “Our previous research showed that switching off street lights at night does not increase crime. This new study suggests switching off street lights between midnight and 6am may actually reduce some types of crime.”
